Dr. Christy Hunter, DPhil
Director of Chemistry 

Dr. Christy Hunter is SMDG’s Director of Chemistry and an accomplished pharmacist-scientist, clinician and academic. He holds a degree in Pharmacy from the University of Brighton and completed his DPhil in Bioorganic Chemistry at the University of Sussex, where he trained under Nobel laureate Sir John Cornforth.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Hunter’s research has focused on drug delivery and nanomedicine, particularly the mechanisms underlying polymer- and nanoparticle-mediated immune toxicity. His work has contributed to a deeper understanding of how nanomedicines interact with biological systems and how they can be designed for improved safety. He has also developed green chemistry approaches to chemical functionalization and stereochemical resolution using microorganisms.

At SMDG, Dr. Hunter contributes expertise in chemistry, pharmaceutical science, drug delivery and nanosafety to the development of the company’s proprietary therapeutic platforms and programs.

Dr. Hunter has authored more than 100 scientific publications and has held academic appointments in Schools of Pharmacy at the Universities of Brighton, Manchester, Leicester and Lincoln. His clinical work includes the development and application of miniaturized technologies for rapid triage in community pharmacy settings.
